Firefighter of the year

SAFETY OFFICER NAMED FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR

STILLWATER- Mayor Ernest Martin and the Village of Stillwater Board of Trustees recently honored Safety Officer Tom Caivana as the Stillwater Fire Department’s “Firefighter of the Year.”  This year’s prestigious award was given to Safety Officer Caivana for his ability to enact and enforce safety measures that protect the firefighters while they operate at incidents and training sessions.  Caivana has also proven himself as a company leader and offers valuable guidance on important decisions.  Under Caivana’s watch the fire department reported zero injuries for 2008.  Mayor Martin presented Caivana with a plaque at the department’s annual installation banquet held in February at the Old Mill Restaurant.  He also received a pin acknowledging his 10 years of service to the fire department.

Five other Stillwater firefighters were also honored at the dinner.  Assistant Chief Jeff Mahar and Past Chief Paul O’Kosky, Sr. were both honored for 35 years of service; Firefighter Kevin Pratt for 15 years; Social Member Mike Mehan for 10 years; and Tracey Cancilla as Past President.
